What to Do When Your Child Doesn’t Want to Practice Math Facts

Boy looking down - What to Do When Your Child Doesn't Want to Practice Math Facts
Memorizing math facts is an important part of learning. Your child needs to be able to pull those math facts from his memory very quickly in order to be able to solve more difficult math problems.

The only way for your child to memorize is through practice. Unfortunately, some children see practicing math facts as a form of torture, but it doesn’t have to be that way. There are some things you can do to make it more enjoyable and meaningful for your child.

Today, I am going to share those things with you so that when you ask your child to practice his math facts, he doesn’t glare at you. 😉

When Your Child Doesn’t Want to Practice Math Facts…

Let him play online math facts games. There are plenty of sites online that have games for practicing math facts. Some of them include Coolmath, ABCYa, Math Playground, Multiplication.com, SoftSchools, and FunBrain. Be sure to monitor your child. Some children will stray away from the games to other sites.

Play math facts songs. Music is a good tool for making learning easier and enjoyable. It can be played while your child plays by himself or rides in the car. Look on YourTube for math facts songs or check on Amazon for recordings you can purchase.

Pull out math facts board games or card games. Math facts board games and card games are a really fun way for kids to practice, especially if you want to reduce online screen time. We have some printable games here that can be used for addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division practice. Some offer solo play options so that your child can practice in a fun way while you make dinner.

Use incentive charts. Incentive charts can help your child see progress towards a goal. The goal in this case is math facts mastery. I have printable Math Facts Incentive Charts here for only $1.00 (plus some angel-themed ones here.) You may want to consider offering your child a reward for mastering each set of math facts.

Let me know how these tips work for you or share some of your own tips on how to encourage a child to practice math facts in the comment section.
